Infographic: A breakdown of Syrian casualties

Last month, the United Nations raised their estimate of the death toll over Syria’s three-year civil war to more than 191,000. Navi Pillay, at the time the UN’s top human rights official, lamented that “it is probably an underestimate of the real total number of people killed during the first three years of this murderous conflict.” The UN’s estimate is based on counts from the Syrian Center for Statistics and Research, the Syrian Network for Human Rights, the Syrian government, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Violations Documentation Center in Syria (VDC). Syria Direct has partnered with the VDC to produce infographics for their monthly casualty reports. It is important to note that the VDC’s  count does not include Syrian army forces,  National Defense Forces (shabiha), Hezbollah, or Iraqi and Iranian militia forces.
