DAMAGED HERITAGE: The Ancient Mosque of Barzeh in downtown Damascus was built during the reign of Caliph Omar bin al-Khattab. It was renovated in the 1940s after its minaret was targeted several times by the French colonial forces. In this video, a rebel fighter claims that the mosque was targeted on Thursday by regime forces based in Eish al-Warwar, a pro-regime Alawite stronghold on Mount Qasioun.
Several historic mosques in Syria have been damaged in the current war, including the Omari Mosque in Daraa and the Omayyad Mosque in Aleppo. The minarets of both mosques have been destroyed. Video courtesy of Barza Damascus YouTube channel.
