Elderly residents recount battle for Jisr a-Shughour

April 29, 2015

Regime forces systematically concentrated their forces in civilian buildings during the battle for Jisr as-Shugour, said a spokesperson with the opposition brigade Ahrar a-Sham on Tuesday.

“The regime used many civilian buildings as military positions, and rebel brigades entering Jisr a-Shughour found sandbags in mosques, the national hospital, and the electric company building,” Ali al-Hafawi said in an interview uploaded to YouTube.

A resident of a retirement home in Jisr al-Shughour said that she heard near-constant gunfire from regime soldiers who had situated themselves on the top floor of the building.

“The regime repeatedly used these places because they believed it would protect them from being targeted by the opposition,” Ali al-Shafawi said.

Jisr al-Shughur was a main conduit for regime forces going to its positions in southern Idlib province.

A coalition of opposition forces captured Jisr al-Shughour from the regime on April 25th, leaving the regime in control of only several military bases in the Idlib province.
