In a video purportedly showing a new type of captive in the Syrian war, two child soldiers captured while fighting for the Islamic State tell the Jabhat al-Nusra interviewer that they are 13 years old and have been with IS for a little more than two months.
“The accent of the two children in the video points to them being Syrians from the northern Syrian countryside of Aleppo, Al-Hasakah or A-Raqqa,” Deir e–Zor-based opposition activist Mujahid a-Shami told Syria Direct on Wednesday. A-Shami expressed his strong belief in the authenticity of the video.
When asked about their opinions on what was happening in Syria, one of the children answered: “Muslims are killing Muslims. My cousin is on the other side, so it was either I kill my cousin or he kills me.”
It was not immediately clear when and where the child soldiers were captured.
“In Deir e-Zor alone, there are currently more than 600 children who have been recruited into the Islamic State, and nearly 40 have been killed,” said a-Shami, the director of the media campaign Deir e-Zor is Being Slaughtered Silently.
“The children who join IS are not necessary supporters, because the group enlists them by seducing them with money and guns.”
