Opposition officials in one eastern Damascus suburb are taking advantage of a brief lull in fighting this week by organizing a soccer tournament for the area’s children.

Over the past three years, kids in the East Ghouta city of Douma have spent more time hiding in bomb shelters and participating in protests than they have chasing soccer balls.

“We hope that competing in the tournament will take the kids’ minds off the siege conditions and constant bombing,” tournament organizer and former soccer player Abu Farouq tells Syria Direct in this video dispatch from Douma.
