An Islamist brigade is claiming it shot down an Iranian plane using anti-aircraft weapons over Damascus International Airport on Thursday morning.

The allegation has been confirmed by the independent Damascus Media Office, and has also been reported on Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya who cited activists on the ground.

The Dara al-Islam Brigade claimed credit for downing what it says is an Iranian plane loaded with weapons it approaches Damascus International Airport on Thursday. The Syrian official news agency, however, stressed that “work continues as normal” at the airport, denying the “news circulated by some media which participate in Syrians’ bloodshed.” Video courtesy of Deraalislam YouTube channel

A group called Dara al-Islam (Shield of Islam), an offshoot of the Free Syrian Army, claimed credit for the attack.

The plane was reportedly carrying weapons, and fell over the airport, causing a fire in the main hall, the Damascus Media Office said in a statement.
