As a stateless Palestinian from Syria who has spent the past eight years in exile since fleeing her home—first in Algeria and now in Denmark—Samara Sallam often finds herself grappling with questions of identity and belonging. Currently studying visual arts in Denmark, Sallam tries to give form to some of these abstract concepts through her art.

In this report, the first episode in a two-part mini-series on artists from Syria in exile, Sallam describes her journey as an artist and shares her thoughts behind some of her most recent artworks—all while reflecting on her own personal story of statelessness.

This report is part of a series on Syrian women and peacebuilding, produced by Syria Direct with support from the Canadian Embassy in Amman. The views or opinions expressed during the series are solely those of the individuals involved and do not necessarily represent those of Syria Direct.
