GENERAL CONFUSION: Pro-regime media outlets are reporting that the famous Iranian general Qasem Suleimani is assisting regime forces in Daraa in a new campaign to isolate Damascus from rebel-held areas in the Daraa and Quneitra countrysides.
A correspondent with the local pro-opposition Yaqeen Media Foundation told Syria Direct Wednesday that his colleagues were unable to confirm the news.
“It might be true that he’s there to raise [regime soldiers’] morale…considering the regime is fighting desperately in the battles going on in Daraa, and wants to win whatever the cost,” the correspondent said.
Pro-regime Facebook page Butulat al-Jaish a-Suri posted a photo of Suleimani on Tuesday under the caption “Qasem Suleimani, leader of the al-Quds brigade by the side of the Syrian Arab army in the battle for Daraa.”
Lebanese-based Al-Hadath news wrote Tuesday that “the picture was taken hours ago in the western Daraa countryside where General Suleimani was supervising military operations that the Syrian army began.”
The Syrian military began a new operation over the weekend to isolate Damascus from rebel-held areas in the Daraa and Quneitra countrysides following a series of rebel gains in the south over the past several months, including the rebel capture of Sheikh Miskeen last month, reported the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Tuesday.
