Rain of terror: Assad’s barrel bombing campaign in Aleppo

Thousands of citizens have been killed and more have fled since the Syrian air force intensified its barrel bombing campaign in Aleppo at the start of the Geneva II peace talks on January 22nd. The bombs are a cheap and imprecise but devastating mean of inflicting widespread human and structural damage: oil drums or water tankards are filled with oil and metal shrapnel are rolled out of a helicopter.

The Syrian government has yet to comment directly on the campaign, but has announced halting on-the-ground progress in an attempted advance in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city. As barrel bombs continue to fall Monday, we present a graphic of where hundreds of barrel bombs fell on Aleppo over twelve days of the campaign:
