With Eid al-Adha approaching, the sheep market in Idlib province is crowded with livestock. But the turnout is almost non-existent due to successive economic crises in northwest Syria

A man smiles while carrying a goat in the sheep market in Idlib province northwest Syria, on the eve of Eid al-Adha, 17/7/2021. With Eid approaching, the demand for sacrifices, especially sheep, increases. However, due to the difficult economic conditions experienced by the residents of northwestern Syria, the last stronghold of the Syrian opposition, and compounded by the depreciation of the Syrian pound (as well as the Turkish lira that is used in the region), it is expected that many Syrians will be unable to buy sacrifices this holiday, and traders will therefore rely on selling their livestock to charity groups and organizations.
