The Free Syrian Army launched a military operation against regime military elements in the city of Homs in July 2011. By the end of November, the FSA had gained control over several parts of the city, with its base in the neighborhood of Babal Amr. In February 2012, the Syrian government launched an offensive against the FSA and forced them and the civilians to evacuate the neighborhood by the following month.
