Douma, 10km southeast of central Damascus, is the de facto capital of the rebel-held eastern suburbs.

It is also one of the most frequently bombed cities in Syria, a reality that has led many schools to close. 

“We were worried about the children,” says one of the teachers who founded a kindergarten to promote early education. “We have a lot of children with mental health issues.”
